My child keeps complaining of a sore heel

Sever’s Disease: Does Your Child’s Heels Hurt?

Is your child complaining of heel pain after sport or running around? It may be Sever’s disease, one of the most common causes of heel pain in active children. Despite its name, Sever’s disease isn’t actually a disease. It’s a temporary condition caused by inflammation of the growth plate at the back of the heel. It most commonly affects children between 8 and 15 years old, especially during periods of rapid growth when the bones grow faster than the muscles and tendons can adapt.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain at the back or bottom of the heel
  • Limping after sport or physical activity
  • Tenderness when the heel is squeezed
  • Pain that improves with rest but returns during activity

How Is It Treated?
The good news is that Sever’s disease usually settles with the right treatment. A podiatrist can help by:

  • Assessing your child’s foot posture and walking pattern
  • Recommending supportive footwear
  • Providing heel lifts or custom orthotics if needed
  • Prescribing stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Advising on activity modification while the heel heals

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

If your child’s heel pain has lasted more than a few days, is affecting their ability to play sport, or is causing them to limp, it’s worth having it assessed. Early treatment can reduce pain, improve comfort, and help your child return to the activities they love sooner.

If your child is experiencing ongoing heel pain, book an assessment with our podiatry team on 9196 8977. We’re here to help get them back on their feet comfortably and confidently.
